A counselor in training (CIT) is a person who is receiving training to be a counselor at a week-long summer camp working with children in grades K-6. This event is open to potential leaders of all ages, but is required for all high school youth who want to serve as a camp counselor. Leadership skills developed during this training are not only great for camp, but can also be utilized in other settings like church and school. Special attention is given to helping leaders identify their spiritual gifts, and identify how this compliments leadership.
A CIT desires to strengthen and develop their faith in God and their service as a Christian disciple within the world.
CIT’s will have the opportunity to learn, explore and practice:
• Leadership skills that can be beneficial in a variety of settings (camp, church, school, 4-H, community organizations, etc.)
• Communication, behavior management, and decision making skills
• Faith sharing and reflection skills
• Understanding specific age-level characteristics
• The roles and responsibilities of counselors and CIT’s
• Awareness of a variety of leadership styles and their appropriate use in the camp setting
• Theology of church camping and outdoor ministry
CITs MUST complete their sophomore year in high school before serving at summer camps, and be recommended for training by a pastor or camp dean.
CITs MUST make a commitment to serve others in the special work of church camp counseling.
CITs must complete three training sessions:
1) A CIT training event.
2) On-Site Training at the site where they intend to serve. (Please note Suttle Lake’s is scheduled alongside of the CIT training weekend.)
Participate in a week of camp as a co-cabin counselor or CIT, including the pre-camp staff meetings.
